The lockdown increased the use of Internet in Peru

The data traffic experienced in the last week of January 2021 showed a growth until 76.83% in home networks and 39.28% in mobile networks of Peru, compared to the registered in the week before to the beginning of the mandatory social isolating (lockdown) first period, ordered in March 2020, revealed the statistics analyzed by the Supervising Organism of Private Investment in Telecommunications (Osiptel, as in Spanish).

Osiptel Piura Regional Office’s Chief Cristhian Dediós Ubillús reported it so. Those records point out that during the new normality, the operating companies faced a substantially superior traffic to the experienced before the beginning of national emergency because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Also, it was noticed that during the first week of mandatory social isolating (February 1st to 7th, 2021), the data traffic in home networks grew until 13.33% while until 9.94% in mobile networks, compared to the previous days to the beginning of this state(January 25th to 31st).

In the same week, the most consumed applications in average were video, such as Netflix, YouTube, and Facebook, that in set represent 81.22% of total traffic loading in home networks. Meanwhile, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, in average, are the most traffic-consuming applications in mobile networks, representing in set 63.16% of the loaded total such week.

The numbers analyzed by Osiptel prove those applications have the particularity of consuming big resources that can overload the net especially in peak hours. Osiptel instructed that during the national emergency state, the Internet service providers must manage the traffic in their networks from 8:00 am. to 6:00 pm., Monday to Friday, to avoid the saturation by priorizing the applications and services that ease the activities related to productiveness like distance work, distance work, and distance education.

Solidarian Use

Osiptel insisted its recommendations about the solidarian use that the users must do on the telecommunications public services, priorizing in worktime, the use of Internet for distance work, distance health, and distance education. In that sense, it praised the people to use the Internet for entertainment (streaming, video-games) in less-traffic hours, what means after 9:00 pm.

Plus, avoid downloading heavy files and share only the absolutely needed ones, and use instant messaging like SMS, WhatsApp, and Messenger, among others.
