Call for swimming against the cancer

PIURA CITY, Peru - Breast, cervix, prostate, skin, stomach, lung. The prevalence of cancer cases seems to grow as the economy grows, or at least that is what public health specialists state, based on the improvement of incomes is not providing a better life quality but promoting a bigger alcohol, tobacco, and synthetic treatments consumption, also sedentary and overweight.

The improvement of the lifestyle could prevent many of these conditions but any folk says not to have time for adopting it. That is why the Berenson Swimming Academy and the Peruvian League For Fighting The Cancer have joined to launch a cause that consists in promoting the physical exercise as a healthy lifestyle and using it to fundraise against the cancer.

The Let’s Swim Against The Cancer initiative  consists in raising 5 soles or 1.5 dollars per every 100 meters or 109 yards to swim. Berenson Academy clarified it is not about a competition but to call professional, amateur swimmers, as well as the people who  don’t use to do this sport, to act by a solidarian style with the cancer patients.

“What cares is to participate,” the academy’s director Walter Berenson affirmed. He added that the idea also looks for educating the community about this disease and the need to donate funds for its fight. It will be done on Saturday, May 25^th, 2019, between 14:00 to 19:00, in the academy facility located on B-3 Antonio Raimondi St., San Eduardo Urbanization, in the northern part of the city.

Who participate will receive a diploma and a campaign-commemorative t-shirt.

About neoplasias in Piura, the women seem to be the main victims. The breast cancer is one of what most terrain seems to gain. In 2013, the Health Ministry’s National Center for Epidemiologics, Diseases Control And Prevention calculated that Piura had 14 deaths for every 100 thousand habitants, putting it in second place across Peru, under Tumbes and above Lima. The specialists suggest the two best manners to prevent it is by having a healthy lifestyle and doing a periodical verification at home and with medical equipment as well.

The second type of cancer attacking the women is cervix’s. In 2018, it was reported until 1000 cases.

But it is not the only affected population group. In 2017, it was also reported  that in Piura until 200 child cancer consults were haven, about which the region also leads the cases chart nationwide. It is known too that here are reported until 60 skin cancer cases per year due to the exposition to the strong solar radiation without any kind of protection.

The authorities have insisted to avoid the solar radiation between 10:00 and 17:00, and if necessary, using sunscreen or wearing a wide hat, plus avoiding outdoor public activities just that times, especially at schools.
