Saint John of God innovates attention in mental health

PIURA CITY, Peru – The Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God (HOsJG)innovated the attention system it offered in the Mental Rehabilitation Center of Piura and Tumbés (CREMPT as its initials in Spanish). In May 2022, it has re-launched as Saint John of God Specialized Hospital (SJGSH) addressed to treat mental health conditions, the first of its kind across Peruvian Northern.

The facility was remodeled with new hospital pavilions differentiated by gender as well as a wide parking lot. The so-called day center and the psychological-social rehabilitation space were kept. In Peru’s Health Ministry nomination, it’s a health institution II-level.

The medical area’s director, Psychiatrist Diego Neyra, explained the SJGSH offers comfort, privacy, and safety for its users. Also, he guaranteed the HOSJG constantly trains its medical, assistential personnel in attention quality, bioethics, and ethic treatment in mental & cognitive health.

“Because of the specialization, we are even a reference in formation of future professionals in medicine (university students, students of medicine, nursering) interested on this health field,” he stressed.

The institution offers services of psychiatry, addiction programme, psychology, hospitalization, specialized drugstore (the only of its kind across Piura), psychological-social rehabilitation service, formation and training. The staff is formed by psychiatrists, psychologists, and occupational therapists.

From the external consultation, a multi-discipline involvement is made such as children, teenagers, adults, and elders both sexes, any social condition. It includes spiritual companion and a permanent contact with the family circle.

“We want to be the referential hospital specialized in mental health and addictions across Peruvian Northern, nationwide. We have the operative capability in hospitalization with 50 beds in safe, modern individual rooms ssepparated by gender (male, female) with assistential, medical, and nursering capability,” Neyra added.

As well, because of an agreement with Piura’s Regional Direction of Education (DREP Piura, as in Spanish) and Piura’s Unit of Local Educational Management (UGEL Piura, as in Spanish), the SJGSH works on the rehabilitation of its patients with the support of teachers trained in occupational techniques and workshops (confectionery, crafting, gardening, dressing, handicraft).

This area is the San Juan de Dios  Technical-Productive Learning Center (CETPRO, as in Spanish) that is also part of the integral treatment of patients. The CETPRO is supervised by DREP and UGEL Piura.

The HOSJG in Piura is 47 years of experience attending mental health. The SJGSH is the first private center specialized in mental health and addiction treatment of HOSJG across Peru.
