Although goat cattle predominates in Piura Coast, it does not consolidate a market for competing beyond its boundaries yet. All photos by William Curay , provided to FACTORTIERRA. MARCAVELICA, Peru - Taking advantage of September 24th Piura 's holiday, in Cañas Village an habit has been started during the last years: having a fair dedicated to goat cattle. It is about  one of the three towns benefit with projects to generate productive chains around the milk of those animals brought by the Spaniards in 16th century, those found a pretty good environment at lowlands here. Cañas is about 25 km or 15.5 miles to the north of Mallarés Town, what is 13 km or 8,8 miles to the northwest of Sullana City.  The road is easily accessible as light as it rains. In Peru, approximately 210,000 families work and depend on growing goats. The majority of those little growers have unsatisfied basic needs. In Piura case, the majority live at Equatorial Dry Forest , a coastal ecosystem...

The so-called king of the desert doesn't expand all its majesty yet.  It is considered as the emblematic tree of Piura  Department's Coast -it normally doesn't grow over than 1650 feet altitude- and it is supposed the Spaniards found it here dominating the landscape when they arrived here in 1532.  The conquerors fastly related it to the European carob tree ( Ceratonia siliqua ), then assigned that name to the species that locals called tahko , according to a Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)'s research , although some archeologists asked by FACTORTIERRA doubt about that theory. the carob word, actually, has Arabic roots - alarrooba , coming from Persian alarroob what means donkey's jaw, curiously the animal that consumes it a lot and never stops to chew it here in Piura.  However, the word describes the European species, apparently not related genetically to South American one, the Prosopis pallida actually. The Señor Cautivo Commonwealth

Imagen
By Julio Vásquez Calle   MONTERO, Peru – The former Sícchez [Seekches] District ’s Mayor Octavio Chuquihuanga Cunya, also former president of the Señor Cautivo Commonwealth, said in 2008 that the rural agriculture of Piura Department highlands is different to the agriculture in lowlands. Those differences are that offer a development chance, joined to the organizations, into an only development vision.   “Being this agricultural corridor [Montero, Jililí, and Sícchez], today it wants to be agriexporter when it is already exporting ecologic coffee to the fair trade markets, international markets, today we are going to make it with the ecologic sugar,” affirmed Mr Chuquihuanga, who also confirmed it was building the first hi-tech industrial processing plant of ecologic sugar in Sícchez District.   By his side, the former Montero District ’s Mayor Ramón Febre Palacios, also former vice-president of the commonwealth, shared the successful experience by exportin...

One of the best entrepreneurships of Piura has been in a little village.   PAIMAS, Peru – What does it depend the longed quality education for? Is it about teachers, students, parents, community, or everybody? While specialists usually discuss those issues in comfortable offices, at the countryside, where the educational needs are urging, there are initiatives that postergate the theory.   At Túnel VI Village’s 15425 School, 3 miles away to the east of Paimas, a town in Piura Department , four teachers looked for offering a healthy school for 84 students in the six grades of elementary education. “I live in Paimas, I move everyday to the school, we go on mototaxi,” its principal Josué Javier Alburqueque Ramírez told us.   Túnel VI (6th Tunnel) is named because it is one of the posts where Quiroz River is transferred under the Andean Range to Chipillico River for supplying water to San Lorenzo Valley. Around the village, about 1980 feet avove sea level, lives from agricul...

The value of the páramos

Imagen
By Diego Mauricio (Regional Network of Water and Environment)       PIURA CITY, Peru – The Ministry of environment recognized in 2008the economic importance of the Andean páramos for the population depending on this ecosystem. That entitty’s former Natural Resources manager Walter Huamani affirmed that “we recognize that [the páramos] historically do have an economic value and the communities located at the highlands ever used it and know of that value.”   “If they don’t know of bank accounts, that is another issue, but they know [the páramos] have a value, and they use it and they live from it. The ecosystems feed the people, whether native people or surrounding people,” he said.   According to the Chira-Piura Hydrographic Basin Autonomous Authority, there was in 2018 a total of 929,247inhabitants through the basin, that represented 56% of the Piura department’s population. How we return the Tallans (and the other related)

Imagen
By Nelson Peñaherrera Castillo   SULLANA, Peru – W hat happened in actual Piura Department before 1532 AD is a big unknown. What we know is explained in key of legend. The rest has consisted in a long forensic work: tracking, digging, extracting, comparing, assuming the gotten is just a piece of a huge puzzle which blanks continue to be as remarkable as the parts seeming to shape.   It’s the case of Tallans , as we know, people who evolved in parallel to Incas, which deadline seems to have ended when the Spanish conqueror Francisco Pizarro entered actual Chira Valley in 1532 through actual Lanconés District , after starting his march from actual Tumbés Department . We know that because there are written records from that point up after – the problem is from that point down before.   Skillful farmers and fishers There is some consensus in historians and archaeologists the Tallans were not one only people but a kind of association of peopl...
