The crown's on its way

Imagen
The so-called king of the desert doesn't expand all its majesty yet.  It is considered as the emblematic tree of Piura  Department's Coast -it normally doesn't grow over than 1650 feet altitude- and it is supposed the Spaniards found it here dominating the landscape when they arrived here in 1532.  The conquerors fastly related it to the European carob tree ( Ceratonia siliqua ), then assigned that name to the species that locals called tahko , according to a Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)'s research , although some archeologists asked by FACTORTIERRA doubt about that theory. the carob word, actually, has Arabic roots - alarrooba , coming from Persian alarroob what means donkey's jaw, curiously the animal that consumes it a lot and never stops to chew it here in Piura.  However, the word describes the European species, apparently not related genetically to South American one, the Prosopis pallida actually.

A Peruvian-Style Drink?

Imagen
The trend in cocktails is coming back to the organic and traditional.  Cambiar a español   LIMA, Peru - At least  in Peru, the trend of the bartending -the art  of preparing drinks, many times, based upon the consumer's personality- is the return to the roots in terms of flavors and the origin of used inputs, where  the organic begins to be more relevant, and against many people could think, this re-discovery has stimulated the creativity of this industry combining arts and science. José Luis Valencia , 36, is one of the bartenders who is surfing the wave, incorporating into his chart many drinks having  typical products of the Peruvian towns as exponents, including

The plague of Peruvian carob

Imagen
Tiny, voracious, it’s eating massively the leaves of the most emblematic tree of Piura.   Attacked carob trees ( Prosopis pallida ) in Cruz Verde, a town of Malingas Community , in Tambograndé, Peru, as they looked like on July 27 th , 2023. Locals told FACTORTIERRA that they also noticed defoliation of Caesalpinia paipai in the acres and Malingas Mount . All photographs along this ENTRY by Milton Garcia , distributed by FACTORTIERRA.   Again, the Peruvian carob trees ( Prosopis pallida ) are losing their leaves –specialists and activists already have a usual suspect this time, despite they couldn’t quantify the extension, yet, so the cost of the damage.   It’s about the Enallodiplosis discordis ( Diptera : Cecidomyiidae ), a kind of tiny fly from the large cecidomid genus, that seems to flourish in dry, desert climates. It was systematized in 1994 by Raymond J. Gagne for a research published by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, now in care of the Smith...

La plaga del algarrobo peruano

Imagen
