The New Piura

Imagen
The functional vision and mission of a less vulnerable city before El Niño.  By Julio ernesto Gianella *   PIURA CITY, Peru - The knowledge we have not assimilated from Pre-Hispanic people is the urban planning. The best proof is  that many of the cities built in the past  are still there despite the natural disasters  and the time lapse.  The city of Caral ( Supe , Lima ), the most ancient of South America, was wisely built and it has not suffered from floods , Nature's onslaugths  neither, in 5000 years of existence. The virtue of urban planning is upon the balance between the what we want and what we can. If it has no contribution  of the vision  and the wishes on a better future, we stay trapped into more of the same; in the other hand,  if  it exceeds in futurist dreams, it crashes into the reality and detracts. That is why the main basis of the Piura's future planning must be the non-vulnerability before the nat...

Spaces Under Pressure

The need to have more parks versus the need to have more houses. By Nelson Peñaherrera C . Photographs provided by ImaginaParque. PIURA CITY, Peru - The hunger for money and the need for a home seem to be pushing the invasion of public spaces for parks. The right of someones is literally drowning the right of a community needing oxygen and regulating the climate, also creating or keeping  ecosystems those got to adapt inside urban spaces. And inside that same urban space, there are human beings who need a place to live, and the whole controversy seem to base upon right here. The denounces of lots usurpation across Piura City  are daily and they all configure alleged criminal schemes  those even the local Catholic Church has been pressumibily involved, as Qatar-based Al-Jazeera TV network suggested mid-December 2016 . In contrast at Santa Julia Neighborhood, located at city's western sector, it try to prevent another future park to disappear combining urbanism a...

The Chira Quake of 2022

What does it happen underneath the nearby soil of Sullana Metropolitan Area?   By Nelson Peñaherrera Castillo | Blog | Twitter | Instagram | WhatsApp     MIGUEL CHECA, peru – Nothing unusual underneath the soil of Chira Valley but a huge land mass embedding under another apparently static. That’s how the report by Hernando Tavera and Julio Martínez with Peru’s Geophysical Institute (IGP as its initials in Spanish) might be briefed after the 6.1-magnitude quake (moderate) that shook a 155-mile area around a hypocenter 21 miles under a spot 11 miles to the west of Sullana 20101 , on October 5 th , 2022.   The epicenter was located between the towns of Sojo and Jíbito, Miguel Checa District , that means between Sullana 20771 and Sullana 20770 . This fact is relevant for the scientists because it trembled amid the continent, not under the sea, like it indeed has happened in events with magnitudes upper than 7.5, mostly reported at Peruvian Southern ...

The Conqueror's Mistake

The relationship between Piura City and the water has not been one of the most positive, misunderstandings are older than its Spanish foundation.  By Nelson Peñaherrera   PIURA CITY , Peru - It is supposed that Francisco Pizarro founded San Miguel on August 15th, 1532, becoming the first Spanish Empire's city in South America, locating  it over the Tallan [pronounce "Tajahn"]  town of Tangarara, actual Marcavelica District, just beside Chira (then Turicarami in Tallan language) River.  What promised to be a productive convivence -the soil was pretty fertile- turned disease soon. Malaria decimated the immigrant population, that decided to move away the river . In 1534, it went about 50 miles SE of Tangarará, next to Pilán Mount, Monte de los Padres Acres and Las Damas Creek, actual La Matanza District. Although Lengash River ran nearby,  the city did not located beside this time. It could be renamed as Piura (supposedly from quechuan "Pir...

Piura is actually a seismic zone – we just must make safe buildings.   SULLANA, Peru – The land shook on Monday, April 2 nd , 2012. The first record of Peru’s Geophysical Institute (IGP, as its initials in Spanish) marked 6.2 magnitude in Richter Scale and VI intensity in Mercalli Scale . Later, it was modified to 5.0 magnitude in Richter’s and III intensity in Mercalli’s, taking Piura City as a reference.   The epicenter , that originally was located 25 miles to the west of Sullana City , ended to correct to 12 miles to the southeast of that spot, 57 miles depth. At least, the department’s coast felt it strong causing the people to overreact – the most were resting at home. It was eigt past ten at night, local time (0308 GMT, April 3 rd , 2012).   The mechanism of quakes in Piura is not different from the western coast of South America. The phenomenon is caused by the subduction of Nazca Plate against the South American Plate . Said simple, the subductio...

A traditional spa under siege

By air, sea, and land, big and small have punished Colán to die.   By Nelson Peñaherrera Castillo   COLÁN, Peru – Before Máncora left it down to a second place –that is also losing—, this one was the spa of Piura for instance. Now, it is condemned to go degrading, droned by corporate and communitarian interests that can sweep centuria of tradition, like the moment they wounded the cliff that keeps it.   La Esmeralda de Colán, better simply known as Colán , is exposed to its water pollution and the waves that threaten the building close to(not mentioning over)the rim. A natural phenomenon is the killer that condemns it to a slow death.   The confluence of Humboldt and El Niño Currents also carry on died animals that get stranded on the rims: porpoises, sea lions, and dolphins have been reported at the zone. Miguel Alarcón Ato, president of La Esmeralda’s Association of Residents and Owners, suspects that the combination of industrial sewerage from Paita City to th...
