A 6.1 magnitude event shook the whole Piura Department, and this is what the science knows up to now.   By Nelson Peñaherrera Castillo   Peru is SHAKING! Magnitude 6.1 Earthquake in Sullana, Peru - YouTube   SOJO, Peru – On July 30 th , 2021, noon, it was goin to be another winter-else, sunshine. Some people were inside their homes watching the Peru’s Bicentennial military parade that, due to Covid-19 pandemic, might have in a closed military facility at Lima City. Just ten minutes after the zenith (1710 GMT), the land under the capital of Miguel Checa District , Sullana Province , shook without a sense and violently.   At a spot, 25 miles under the surface of rock, sand, and pulverized clay, two huge pressing landmasses, maybe 3300 feet thickness, shocked one each other and started a list of focused events in a portion running from  Marcavelica District , just the north of Miguel Checa, and going to the border of provinces Sullana and Piura, at ...

The Archeological Pearls of Chira

The Pre-Columbian history in and around the second largest city of Piura urges a bigger investigation.  All photographs by César Rivas , special to FACTORTIERRA SULLANA, Peru - Locals in Upper Chira Valley call them "lomas" (hills in English)  and their houses are around them. Inclusive, one of them is the source for making adobes or unbaked bricks in Chalacalá Baja Town. But at least around 550 years ago, they seemed to be funerary monts. "There are at least about 30 huacas like those between Sullana [City] and  La Peña," Archaeologist Daniel Dávila Manrique explains. We have already shared with him the experience of identifying and verifying evidences of this kind in

The Conqueror's Mistake

The relationship between Piura City and the water has not been one of the most positive, misunderstandings are older than its Spanish foundation.  By Nelson Peñaherrera   PIURA CITY , Peru - It is supposed that Francisco Pizarro founded San Miguel on August 15th, 1532, becoming the first Spanish Empire's city in South America, locating  it over the Tallan [pronounce "Tajahn"]  town of Tangarara, actual Marcavelica District, just beside Chira (then Turicarami in Tallan language) River.  What promised to be a productive convivence -the soil was pretty fertile- turned disease soon. Malaria decimated the immigrant population, that decided to move away the river . In 1534, it went about 50 miles SE of Tangarará, next to Pilán Mount, Monte de los Padres Acres and Las Damas Creek, actual La Matanza District. Although Lengash River ran nearby,  the city did not located beside this time. It could be renamed as Piura (supposedly from quechuan "Pir...

The centennial building, in the edge of Sullana Province, seems to be counting its last hours.       The following photographs show the structural damages as found on February 9 th , 2024, distributed by FACTORTIERRA.   SOJO, Peru – The house that was the headquarters of the estate managed by Miguel Checa Checa (tambograndé, Jul. 5, 1861 – Piura City, Oct. 19, 1935), that extended across 111,192 acres (like 10 Jersey Cities) along actual Piura Department , is bringing down in pieces.   It has left vulnerable because of three extraordinary El Niño events (1983, 1997, 2017), two strong and nearby earthquakes (2021, 2022), and the lack of maintenance.   According to Carlos Checa Leigh, grand-grandson of Miguel Checa Checa and actual manager of the house, one of the major threats is the indifference of authorities and citizens. Maybe not at all. As much as FACTTORTIERRA learned, , there are cultural collectives interested in participati...
