[Photos] Irrigation infrastructure is deteriorating at Lower Chira

Imagen
SULLANA, Peru – Organized farmers at Paita Province northwestern seem to be uncomfortable about the      agricultural and oil corporations operating in the same territory. According to the Board of Chira’s Hidraulic Sector Users (JUSHCH as in Spanish), the pass of heavy vehicles and the existence of pipelines spoil the dams and drains allowing to evacuate water out of agricultural zones or relief Chira River in overload times.   In Amotapé District , the vehicles of sugarcane-grower companies Caña Brava and AgroChira might damaged dams managed by Chira-Piura Special Project (PECHP as in Spanish) and a canal in charge of JUSHCH. This last one’s president Angel Zapata requested to PECHP to nullify the circulation authorization through the so-called Canal Norté (Northern Canal) for both agricultural companies. He added the dust caused by the traffic do not favor the normal growth of adjacent crops.   The people seemed to support the request while Chira...

The Archeological Pearls of Chira

Imagen
The Pre-Columbian history in and around the second largest city of Piura urges a bigger investigation.  All photographs by César Rivas , special to FACTORTIERRA SULLANA, Peru - Locals in Upper Chira Valley call them "lomas" (hills in English)  and their houses are around them. Inclusive, one of them is the source for making adobes or unbaked bricks in Chalacalá Baja Town. But at least around 550 years ago, they seemed to be funerary monts. "There are at least about 30 huacas like those between Sullana [City] and  La Peña," Archaeologist Daniel Dávila Manrique explains. We have already shared with him the experience of identifying and verifying evidences of this kind in

The contamination tarnishes the Pearl of Chira.   By Mako Fernández Guerrero , Nelson Peñaherrera Castillo , & Ronald Zevallos Muro . Photographs by Franco Alburqueque .   SULLANA, Peru – The rumor –because no one confirmed the source—ran like spread powder: the second most dangerous city of Peru after Callao. The inexistent tourism vanished, the Sullana-natives  abroad were seen bad, coming to this city from other places equaled to enter a war zone.   Until 2013, the second most important city of Piura, one of the 20 most important ones in Peru (after the 15 th place), concentrated about 150,000 people of 1.7 million who lived across Piura Department , according to the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (2007). It’s the capital city of Sullana Province and it hosted the half of its population, according to the same source.   Where have the ddiscouraging merit come out from? It was repeated, it was repeated, and even it provocated an emerge...

The Chira Quake of 2022

Imagen
What does it happen underneath the nearby soil of Sullana Metropolitan Area?   By Nelson Peñaherrera Castillo | Blog | Twitter | Instagram | WhatsApp     MIGUEL CHECA, peru – Nothing unusual underneath the soil of Chira Valley but a huge land mass embedding under another apparently static. That’s how the report by Hernando Tavera and Julio Martínez with Peru’s Geophysical Institute (IGP as its initials in Spanish) might be briefed after the 6.1-magnitude quake (moderate) that shook a 155-mile area around a hypocenter 21 miles under a spot 11 miles to the west of Sullana 20101 , on October 5 th , 2022.   The epicenter was located between the towns of Sojo and Jíbito, Miguel Checa District , that means between Sullana 20771 and Sullana 20770 . This fact is relevant for the scientists because it trembled amid the continent, not under the sea, like it indeed has happened in events with magnitudes upper than 7.5, mostly reported at Peruvian Southern ...
